Louisiana Congressman Leaves the Dems

According to Roll Call magazine, Representative Rodney Alexander (LA) has left the Democratic party and has declared himself Republican. I can think of other Democrats over the years that have switched their loyalties, but I can't think of a single Republican to do the opposite (not there haven't been any, I just can't think of one). Senators Ben Nighthorse Campbell (CO) and Richard Shelby (AL) were both Democrats at one time.

One thing is for sure, the Democrats are not going to be happy to see the majority-minority gap widen. I wonder how the Republicans will reward their new poster boy? A seat on the Appropriations Committee would be nice.

There is one Republican who switched sides, and his name was Rep. Mike Forbes from the First District of New York.

His staff found out about his switch when he called them from Gephardt's office (they saw the name on the caller ID). His entire staff quit, and were promptly hired by the RNC.

Forbes lost his re-election as a Democrat in his own primary against a former librarian, Regina Seltzer.

Put that in the category of "what was he thinking!"
