We shouldn't be surprised that Israel is spying on us. They are not our friends in the way that many Americans suppose they are. Our interests are similar in many areas of Mid-East policy, but we are wrong-headed when we suppose that fully supporting them is our only option for Middle East policy.
The US should begin to slowly disassociate itself from Israel and engage the Arab governments for a more strategic balance in the region. While the US may remain Israel's ally, we cannot forever shape our foreign policy to the region around their interests. They can fight for themselves very effectively.
Heresy, you say?
Even stranger are some details just coming out explaining the split inside the administration about how to deal with Iran. Read this back channel explanation of events.
