Colonial Nostalgia By Africans?

Thabo Mbeki's brother in the BBC Online today states that Africa was 'better in colonial times.' It's not an uncommon expression in Africa, though you would never hear it in a Divinity School, for example. The real picture of Africa during and post colonialism is a mixed bag that should hold lessons about the value and difficulty of the Iraqi occupation.

Is it fairer to compare Iraq to Nigeria or Botwsana, examples respectively of corrupt and efficient African governments? Do Iraqi attitudes toward freedom in general veer towards South Africa or Egypt? These are important questions that highlight the importance of a country's readiness to fight for the demoocratic ideal and not drift into kleptocratic tyranny.
