This evening, I met with officers and members of the Republican Youth Majority at a popular Capitol Hill bar. RYM is a group of students and young professionals who believe that the majority of Republicans are more centrist than the Party leadership would have people believe--and they have the statistics to support them. Their stance is broadly pro-choice, pro-environment, and pro-fiscal responsibility, issues that reflect the pure Republican ideal of hands-off type government. We, at NR, have been worried about the future of the GOP as we watch hordes of our generation run into the waiting arms of the "socially tolerant" Democratic Party. We believe that this phenomenon is rooted in the GOP's insistance on taking a stance on hot button moral issues, while de-emphasizing the core values. Many young "liberals" today seem confused into believing that the anti-government party is the Democratic Party. The GOP has created polarization where it need not be, losing its origninal promise of small federal government, and becoming associated with the all-seeing, all-encompassing behemoth we see today.
