Obviously Hugo Chavez is a man of deep insight.
President Hugo Chavez cautioned Venezuelan parents to protect their children from Halloween with a spooky warning that the US tradition is rooted in "terrorism."
"What they have implanted here, which is really a 'gringo' custom, is terrorism," Chavez said, quoted in the local press. "They disguise children as witches and wizards, that is contrary to our culture."
If he wants to see real US cultural terrorism, we'll send Rosanne Barr, Madonna and a maybe Susan Sarandon to him.

Chavez´s comments on halloween were rash. What many reporters left out was the ¨Why¨ in this story. There were some anti-Chavez haloween lanterns in Caracas. I did see one with my eyes.
There is actually some really good news in Venezuela when it comes to econimics and politics. Chavez is polling at 77%. I even talked to 3 vendors of halloween goods here. They said buisness was down and the comments were stupid, but they still support the president.
Last year the econimy of Venezuela grew by 18% this year it seems to be growing by the same amount. This is after the biggest fall of average income of any country in the world in the 35 year prior to Chavez.
He isn´t even as much a commie as people seem to think. The Private sector has actually grown since he took office.

I wonder what portion of Venezuela's economic growth comes from rising oil and gas prices, rather than sound economic management? My bet is: a lot (if not most of it). I'll check out the article. I'm not likely to change my opinion of Chavez quickly, though.
